The state of Rajasthan, in the north-west corner of India, is rich in
history, legend and romance. Rajasthan was originally made up of more than
22 princely states, each of the ruled by Rajput prince. The land of medieval
fortresses and palaces, temples, mosques, and lakes and gardens galore.
Rajasthan's uniqueness and magnificence has made it one of the first choice
of the tourists heading for India.
Though every corner of Rajasthan has something for its visitors, their are
some major cities in Rajasthan which are worth seeing. Some of them are
Jaipur : Also
known as the Pink City on account of its pink-hued buildings, is the capital
of Rajasthan. The maze of pavilions, the courtyards and gardens in the City
Palace complex is fascinating as is the 953 windows of Hawa Mahal (Palace of
the Winds). Seven miles away, atop a steep hillside is deserted Amber Fort,
the ancient capital.
Jodhpur : Jodhpur
is situated at the edge of the Thar Desert. The city is dominated by a
massive fort Meherangarh which stands right in the center of
town. There are seven gates in this fort. The view from the ramparts of the
fort overlooking the town below is spectacular.
Jaisalmer : The
walled city Jaisalmer perched on a hill seems to be rising up out of the
desert is like splendid. But this is not just a fort, it houses several
thousand people within its complex, living and working. One can find small
hotels, restaurants, beauty parlors and handicraft stores, along the narrow
stone streets. Jaisalmer is also the main point for the popular camel
safaris. The sunset viewing from its terrace is just spectacular.
Udaipur : The
White City of Rajasthan is known as Indias most romantic city and the
Lake Palace Hotel is the jewel in its crown. Floating in the middle of Lake
Pichola, this palace was built 300 years ago of pure white marble.
Bikaner : More
popularly known as the camel country, The city is renowned for the best
riding camels. This royal fortified city, lies in the north of the desert
state. Bikaner is dotted with many sand dunes. Bikaner retains the medieval
splendor that pervades the citys lifestyle.
Pushkar : Pushkar
is situated 11 km from Ajmer on the edge of the desert. The tiny peaceful
town of Pushkar along the bank of the Pushkar Lake is an important
pilgrimage spot for the Hindus.
