Chemrey Valley

Chang La (5289m), the third highest motorable pass in the world is located at the lower reaches of the Chemrey Valley, which is accessible by bus or taxi. One need a inner line permit to cross the pass and visit the beautiful lake at Pangong Tso.

Chemrey Valley

Small Chemrey village is dominated by Thekchhok Gompa, which was built in the 17th century. The prayer hall of the monastery have preserved rare murals of 1000 Buddhas and a chamber on the 4th floor has a 3m high statue of Padmasambhava. Chemre Angchok festival is held in November. Beyond Chemrey, the road climbs to Shakti, a sprawling farming village with a large army base and ruins of huge fort. Another famous monastery Takthog Gompa is located 7 km north of Shakti. The prayer chamber is set in a cave, from here , the road climbs to the Wari La (5273m), a possible starting point for treks into the Nubra Valley. Only accommodation is the Jammu and Kashmir Tourist Bungalow.

Rupsu Valley

Located at the 240km southeast of Leh and tucked against the Western Himalayas, Rupsu valley is adorned with demeaning mountain scenery, the serene lake of Tso Moriri. The waters are mildly brackinsh from mineral salts dissolving out of the surrounding rocks and the area is inhabitated by Khampa tribals. About 50km north of Tso Moriri is smaller lake of Tso Kar. It is accessible by jeep or 4 days trek. nearby Thukse village has small gompa. To enter the Rupsu valley you need a inner line permit that can be arranged at Leh. The only accommodation is the informal campsite by the gompa in Korzok.
