The main trekking season runs from late June to October, very few people come here for winter trek along the frozen Zanskar lake. It is one of the toughest treks in Indian subcontinent where continues mountain ridges, comprising scores of 6000 meter peaks links different mountaineous provinces of Lahaul and Ladakh provides one of the great challenges of the Indian Himalaya. As many treks climb over 5000m, proper acclimatisation is essential to avoid high altitude sickness.



Padum To Darcha Via Shinkun La
Padum to Darcha is an easy trek and very convenient for a first time trekking experience in the trans Himalayas. There is only one pass, which is quite rare in this area and many villages and campsites, so if you want to make it in 10 days or more, it is quite easy to organise. The only steep bit you have to encounter will be on the day you cross the Shinkun La (5,050m).

Padum To Lamayuru Via Singge La
This is a tough trek begins at Padum. From Padum, the route folows the left bank of the Zanskar river before diverting north to the whitewashed tower of Ligshet gompa over Hanuma La (4950m). You can take jeep to reach to Pishu . from Pishu, the trail crosses the Zanskar range via the Singge La (5050m). From Photaksar the trail crosses Sisir La (4850m) to the village of Honupatta and continues mostly downhill to Wanla. The final stage can be crossed by foot or prearranged jeep.

The Chadar Trek
Few people dare to attempt the Chadar trek in winter. There is no high altitude stages but conditions here are extremely testing and need serious equipments for winter camping. The starting point is Chiling, accesible by jeep from Leh. The route follows the river for seven days with camping stops in rock caves along the river bank. Homestays are available in the last few villages before Padum.
