Zanskar

Location: Located at 20 km south of Rangdum bears the Pazila watershed across, which lies Zanskar, the most isolated of all the trans Himalayan valleys.
Getting There: Zanskar can be reached by crossing several high passes. Padum in the Zanskar valley may be joined but the track is rough. The valley can be reached by two ways: either an arduous week long trek or 14 hour drive along a pitted and potholed track along the Suru River.
When To Visit: 8 months Zanskar is inaccessible to outsiders. Accessible only on Summer.
Where To Stay: Stay at the Tourists complex or be economical and opt for the camps in the tents. There are few hotels, which provides basic facility.
Zanskar is an arduous, rugged and completely isolated Buddhist valley in Kargil district bordering Ladakh. The valley is at an altitude of 4000m and can be reached only on one motorable road via Pensi-la, which opens after snow melt in June. Dotted with little villages and desolate monasteries perched on high cliffs, the stark landscape of Zanskar valley is often shrouded with adventure and mystery. The Zanskar river is the main river that formed when two other river Stod and Lungnak meet at the valley. Two valleys Stod and Lungnak are guarded the Zanskar. The Stod is greener with beautiful farms while Lungnak is sparsely populated and rugged.

Zanskar

Zanskar is a tri-armed valley system resting between the Great Himalayan Range and Zanskar mountain. It takes the shape of star towards the west, north and south from a wide central expanse. Although Zanskar is administered by Kargil district but the Buddhist influence is predominant. Zanskar spread over an area of 5000 sq.km and about 10000 Buddhist population lives here. Even the valley has its own ceremonial king. Zanskar is surrounded by rugged mountains and deep gorges. From November to May Zanskar conceal in oblivion. The whole valley is wrapped in a blanket of snow. Local people store fuel and food in the summer for tough winter months. A few audacious travelers trek here in winter along the frozen river to see the marooned valley at its best. The valley is very much isolated and has very limited provision for travelers. There is no gas station and people come here on there motorcycles or vehicles are adviced to carry fuel in spare cans.

Sights And Activities

Padum
The main town in zanskar and a base point of treks in the region. Padum has basic accommodation, shops where you can buy your basic needs, and share taxis. The main attraction of the town is the ancient rock carving of the five Dhyani Buddhas.

Pipiting
Pipiting is one of the oldest religious sites in the region, dotted with Buddhist temples and chortens. Dalai Lama delivered her sermons in the past. A large stupa built by Emperor Kanishka and a monastery was built by famous saint Padmasambhava in the 8th century. The temple is embellished with beautiful murals and paintings.
Karsha
Karsha is perched at a height of 3610m and specially renowned for its rich culture and traditions. The Gelugpa monatery at Karsha is the largest in the Zanskar Valley and must be visited to know the Buddhist life. A famous festival is celebrated here between July and August. The monatery also preserve beautiful murals and paintings and from the roof of the monastery overlooks magnificent view of Himalaya and Zanskar valley.

Trekking
Trekking in Zanskar Valley is the most important and challenging activity. The difference of landscape in this barren land is spectacular. The high altitude treks around the Zanskar region can be a fantastic experience. Padum to Lamayuru, or Padum to Darcha are the better-known treks, and you pass some stunning monasteries on the way.

Whitewater Rafting
It is a common activities among tourists who are adventurer but do not want to indulge in tougher task like trekking. Starts from July to mid September when the surge is at its best.
