
The name Jabalpu derived from Arabic word Jabal means mountains pointing to the Arab countries. It was once a favourite trading place for Arab traders during the middle ages. During the British era, Jabalapur was named as Jabalipuram. The city has also a Hindi name, Sanskardhani. The healthy climate and hilly surroundings attract saints and hermits from all over the country. This prehistoric city is a preferred place for geologist and archaelogist as here India's first fossilized Dinosaur has been found.
Sights And Activities
Marble RocksThe splendid marble rocks are located in just 21km from Jabalpur, in a small village called Bhedaghat. This marble rocks are scattered on the banks of Narmada river. The landscape is covered with dark volcanic seams of green and black and stand at the height of about 100ft on the either side of Narmada river. These rocks looks fabulous under the moonlit skies. Take a boat ride along the Narmada river and enjoy the sheer charm of the rocks.
Madan Mahal Fort
This 900 years old fort is nicely placed on the rocky hills. The location and the simplicity makes the place worth a visit. The fort was established by Gond king Madan Shah in the year 1116 and since then it has become one of the finest landmark of the city.
Rani Durgavati Memorial And Museum
This museum is constructed in the year 1964 in memory of legendary queen of Bundelkhand. The museum preserve fine collections of impressive items such as ancient sculptures, rare manuscripts and statues of god and goddess dating back from 10th century. There is also a separate section of museum that is dedicated Mahatma Gandhi.
Water Sports
Some 14km towards Marble Rocks, is located a fine complex called Sea World. It is a swimming pool complex with outdoor slides and pools. MP tourism is building a water sports complex at Bargi, 32km southwest of Jabalpur.
