Pachmarhi is Madhya Pradesh exotic hill station, surrounded by waterfalls,
cave temples, the forested ranges of the Satpura National Park and rock
paintings dating back 10000 years. Once an oblivious landscape, surrounded
by forests, was discovered by explorer captain J Forsyth in 1857 and set up
a Forestry Department at Bison Lodge in 1862.
Apart from nature's wonder, Pachmarhi is also an archaeological treasure
trove. The beautiful rock paintings in the Mahadeo Hills are dating back
from 500-800 AD. Even the earliest paintings is estimated 10000 years old.
The valley, ravines and gorges, mighty waterfalls and ancient caves make
nature in its most expressive form. The enchanting mountains and deep azure
pools are delightful to watch. Not only that wildlife fans will be also
rewarded with glimpse of some elusive animals and birds.
Sights And Activities
Satpura National Park
The park is enshrouded with jamun, bamboo and sal trees. This is quite a
secluded forest land and home to number of exotic animals. The park is
mainly crowded with gaur(Indian bison), sambar, leopard, barking deer, gold
throated chiloropsis, great pied hornbills, kingfishe, various reptiles and
occasional tiger.
Priyadarshini Point
Originally named after the discovered, Forsyth Point is a saucer shaped
vantage point from where you can view the whole of stunning beauty of
Pachmarhi.
Caves
Caves are one of the major attractions of Pachmarhi. Pandav Caves are the
famous one, which also mentioned in epic Mahabharata, stated that pandav
brothers spent some time of their exile here. The Hearer's Cave is famous
for its unique painting where a man seated and playing a harp. The cave is
close to Jata Sahnkar Shrine, another Pachmarhi tourist spot. Chieftain's
Cave derives its name from a battle scene showing two chieftains on horses.
There are other paintings on the terrace that runs the length of the south,
south east and east faces.
Pipariya
Pipariya is a small town and a municipality in Hoshangabad district of
Madhya Pradesh. The place is on the main line of Mumbai-Howrah via
Allahabad. The place is 47km from Pachmarhi and a must visit place while
visiting Pachmarhi. It serve as an ideal base to visit Pachmarhi. There are
two rooms near the bus stand at Tourism Motel. You will find jeep for rent
to Pachmarhi. Ask your your driver to break the journey at Denwa view
lookout. Also you can take buses run at regular interval fro Pipariya.
Christ Church
This small but beautiful church was made by British. The architecture is
also unique among other churches in Madhya Pradesh. The hemispherical dome
on top with its ribs ending with faces of angels. The walls of the church is
embellished with stained glass panes where the beautiful sun rays pass
through the church.
Camping
Camping is a famous adventure activity you can enjoy in Pachmarhi forests.
The forests are famous for scout, winter, and mountaineering training camps.
In the darkness tall ant hills seems bit of sculptures and ubiquitous
langurs stare down from the high point gular trees.
