Location: The twin hill staion of Lonavala and Khandala are a little more halfway between Mumbai and Pune.
How To Reach: Nearest railways station is Lonavala station. Also you can travel through Mumbai Pune expressway, which cut down the traveling time to 2 hours
When To Go :The weather is pleasant all year round.
Where To Stay: There are plenty of hotels, resorts and cottages in this hill station.
Lonavala has mushroomed to cope with hordes of holiday makers and second home owners from Mumbai. But just 30 years ago, the town of Lonavala 100 km southeast of Mumbai and 62 km northwest of Pune, was a quiet hideaway in Western Ghats. The place is famous for fantastic Buddhist caves of Karla, Bhaja and Bedsa, dates back to Satvahanas period (2nd century BC).

The lush green environ coupled with loving climate and cinematic background, no doubt Lonavala becomes a favorite spot of many Bollywood flicks. There are ample trees to run around, high cliffs to threaten jumping off and the best part it, is the proximity to Bombay. Lonavala is absolute beautiful in the monsoon when it pours down relentlessly, the soaked atmosphere add magic to the environment whether drench in outside or remain in between four walls, playing cards in a cozy room, sipping drink or munching hot snacks, undoubtedly, the place is ideal fro any type of holiday.

Coming here do not require much preparation. Apart from obvious honeymoon gateway, this is also an outdoor enthusiast’s hot spot. With so many Buddhist caves, majestic forts and rugged hills within easy reach, a strategic starting point for hikes, treks and rock climbs.

Bushy Dam
This is just 6 km away from Lonavala, nestled in the forests is overcrowded with people. During monsoon water running down from the steps of the dam creates an interesting waterfall. You can sit on the steps as the water flows but need to be careful as there can be sudden surge in water force and level.

Ryewood Park
A popular picnic spot located just behind the main market. A mini botanical garden has lawns, trees and plenty of open spaces for picnic lunches in the cool shade. Opposite of a park is an old Christian cemetery, which is worth a visit. Some of the gravestones are more than 100 year old.

Walk Down To Duke’s Nose
It is named after the British governor of erstwhile Bombai, the summit of Duke’s nose is locally known as Nagphani ( cobra’s hood). Adjacent hills is Sausage Hills, moderate hill up on a small ridge.

Karla And Bhaja Caves
It is the most visited place in Lonavala, located about 15 km outside. The caves are rock cut Buddhist chaitya ( temple) and vihara (monastery). The Karla Caves represent one of the best rock cut architectures, renowned for two row of decorated pillars that line the main hall. Exactly opposite the Karla ridge lie the Bhaja Caves. Bhaja Caves dates back to the 2nd century BC. The rock cut architecture is better preserve than Karla.

Fishing
The Lonavala region is considered the lake district of western India because it is dotted with many beautiful artificial lakes. There is plenty of opportunities for fishing in these parts. Most lakes are open for fishing except those belonging to the Tata Electric Company. Some basic fishing equipments like hooks, floats, line etc can be found in Lonavala market but it is advisable to come prepared with your own.

Taste The Chikki
Sweet chikki is perfect sweet brittle candy, which can available in many varieties such as dry fruits and nuts – peanut, sesame, cashew, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, dates and other fruits.
