Location: aintia Hills District is known as Jowai, which is located 64km away from Shillong at an altitude of 1380m along Shillong – Silchar highway.
How To Reach: The nearest railhead and airport is in Guwahati (Assam). Both delux and ordinary bus services are available.
When To Visit: September to May
Where To Stay: Shillong has plenty of hotels and rest houses.
Jaintia Hills are picturesque countryside with rolling rice fields and a forest of monolith. Set at a height of 1380m of the eastern side of the Meghalaya. The district of Jaintia was formed in the year 1972, bestowed by nature with its wonder, this unexplored beauty of northeast is blessed with green surroundings, clear sunshine, high plateaus, rippling rivers, showering waterfalls, baffling valleys and mesmerizing streamlets. One of the beautiful places in northeastern states, Jaintia Hills are guarded by imperial Myntdu river in Meghalaya.

Sights And Activities

Jowai
Jowai is the main town and headquarter of the Jaintia Hills. A beautiful town being circled by the royal Myntdu river.

Thadlaskein Lake
This historic lake is 56km away from Shillong. According to a story, a rebel general of Jaintia Raja with his members of 290 clans dug up this lake to commemorate the great exodus of the clans. The place is a nice place for outing, boating and picnic.

Nartiang
The stunning forest of monoliths is the landmark of the village. The place is located 65km from Shillong and once summer capital of Jaintia kings. Megalithic remnants are huge and believed to put up by Mar Phalyngki, a Goliath of yore. The Nartiang menhir measures 27 feet 6 inches in thickness. Another attraction is 500 years old temple dedicated to goddess Durga, was once used for human sacrifices. You can spot the endless hole into which severed heads were once tipped.

Syntu Ksiar:
The river Myntdu, which encircled the Jowai town suddenly halt at this place forming a vast pool of calm water. Syntu Ksiar means ‘ golden flower’. From here again river arouse and runs its ever vibrant course.
