Spread loosely over a saddle joining two large hills, Kohima forms a pass that played a strategic role during World War II. Along with Indian troops British soldiers defeated Japanese army in this land. The large Angami settlement of Kohima village is set on a high hill overlooking modern Kohima. The houses are typicaly made in a Naga style with labyrinth lanes, carved heads to signify family status, grain baskets in front of the houses and the troughs used to make rice beer are some of the distinctive features.

Sights And Activities
Second World War CemeteryThe signature attraction of Kohima, this cemetery commomerate the officers and men who died during the battle with Japanese in Kohima. The immaculate garden which bears the famous epitaph When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave out today. Anthore landmark of the town is the Catholic Cathedral at Aradura Hill, which is nearby the War cemetery.
State Museum
The State Museum of Nagaland is located 3km north of Kohima town. It preserves a superb collection carved statues, pillars, gateposts, artifacts and jewelery. There are plenty of mannequin-in-action scenes depicting traditional Naga lifestyles.
Kisama Heritage Village
This open air museum is located 10km down the well paved Imphal road. The collection of traditional style Naga buildings fully represents different tribal styles, including traditional morungs (bachelor dormitories) and full size log drum. Hornbill Festiva, the Nagaland biggest annual event is been held here first week of December that showcase Naga tribes converging for colorful weeklong cultural, sporting and costumed dance celebration.
Excursions
There are few nice places to venture from Kohima. One is Dzukou Valley that is filled with wild flowers and caves. Another one is Japfu Peak that offer a splendid view of Kohima town and also a place for amature trekking and scaling. Intangki Wildlife Sanctuary is located 37km from Dimapur and a home to fascinating flora and fauna.
Shopping
Below the War cemetery, bustling markets sell local product including Naga shawls, bags, decorative spears and other handicrafts. Another place to get authentic Naga artifacts and traditional items, is Sales Emporium in the heart of the town.
