Location : Meghalaya is located in north-eastern India, bordeign Assam and Bangladesh.
Climate: Summers are dry but pleasant while winters are chilly. The most important feature of the state are the abundance of rainfall, which continues from May to October.
Best Time To Visit: October to March.
Languages: Khasi, Garo, English.
Main Festivals: Festivals and celebrations here mainly belong to one of the three tribes that inhabit in Mehgalaya that are Garos, Khasis and Jaintias. Nongkrem Dance and Shad Suk Mynsiem belong to the Khasi tribes and are celebrated in the months of October/Novemeber and April respectively. Wangala festival is celebrated by the Garos in the month of October. While the Jaintias celebrate the Laho Festival and Behdienkhlam, in the month of July.
Meghalaya is the most beautiful north-eastern state of India, owing to the heart-warming welcome that one receives by its clean atmosphere, greenery, waterfalls, lakes, wildlife sanctuaries and botanical parks. Every place in Meghalaya seems to be a tourist attraction here with its magnetic natural landscaping and pleasant climate, combined with the abundant rainfall that it receives. Meghalaya is also a reserve of caves made of limestone, which are present in the entire state. The natural abundance is not just for a glance but it also has on offer plenty of adventurous sports such as river rafting, mountaineering, camping, biking and trekking.

Shillong
If you want to click pictures in front of a historical monument or want to have a luxurious stay at a five-star hotel, then this place is not for you. Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is an appropriate destination for nature lover who wants to have a peaceful conversation with the humble peaks, curious clouds, sparkling waterfalls and winding lakes.

Lady Hydari Park
Lady Hydari Park is named after the wife of first Indian Governor of Assam, Akhbari Hydari. The park is styled in the Japanese fashion and is carved out in Shillong. Its main attraction is the variety of roses and blossoms that beautify the park. A zoo is also situated within the park that houses several animals and birds, kept in best of conditions.

Ward's Lake
Ward's Lake is a scenic horse-shoe shaped lake, in Shillong. It is famous for activities like walking, boating, picnics or just for lazing around. The place also has a botanical garden and a golf course situated nearby. The lake is also known as the Polok Lake.

Cherapunji
The town of Cherapunji is believed to receive the highest rainfall in the world. This record breaking characteristic of the place gives it a unique identity. Cherpunji, that lies at the point of confluence of Kashi Hills and Bay of Bengal, is geographically placed to receive rainfall from both north and south monsoon. It is situated around 60 km from the capital city of Shillong and at an altitude of 4500 ft. Apart from its rainy identity, there are also other attractions to watch out for. Mawsmai waterfall, which is the fourth highest in the country, is located here,There are around fifty limestone caves scattered in and around Meghalaya, including Cherapunji for some adventure trail. You can also take a look at the ancient monoliths near the Mawsmai falls.

Tura
Tura is known for its pretty landscaping and its beautiful sunset scene from the Tura peak. Tura peak is an adventure spot where the thrill begins, with hiking and rock climbing options and its paraphernalia available here. Simsang Game Reserve, Balpakram National Park, Siju Caves and Naphak Lake are some of the major attractions of the place.

Jowai
Jowai is a place situated on Jaintia Hills, a tribal region. The place is famous for the Myntdu river, Thadlaskein lake, Syndai Village for its caves and Nartiang, for its Durga Temple, which is almost five centuries old.

Activities

Enjoy a boat ride in the Meghalaya Botanical Garden or go for a leisurely walk on the velvety grass. Shopping would be an exciting activity here with so many options available like the hand woven garments, cane furniture, bamboo items, tribal jewelery, that will keep the excitement enhancing. Polo Ground and Golf Courses will prove to be good options for the sporty sought, with a unique experience to offer amidst the hills. There are ample spaces in Shillong and other areas for picnics like the waterfalls and gardens. Besides the light adventure and leisure, hard core adventure activities can also be done including trekking and mountaineering.

TRIBAL TOUR TO MEGHALAYA

The tribes of Meghalaya mainly belong to either the Ki Hynniew Trep or the Garos. The Hynniewtrep or the Khasi-Pnar tribes are mainly found in the eastern Himalayan hills of Jaintia and Khasi. These are sub-divided into the Wars, the Bhois and the Jaintias according to the location in which they reside. The Garos or the Achiks, mostly belong to the Indo-Tibetan race, and reside in the Garo Hills.

The tribes of Meghalaya mostly follow the hierarchy commencing with the mother, and the youngest of the daughters has a right to inherit the family property. They have their own customary practices, taboos, dressing styles and food habits. Their staple food is rice and they are fond of rice beer. Some of the most sumptuous fish and meat preparations comes from this region. The main religion followed by the tribal people is Christianity, while Hinduism and Buddhism are also commonly followed.
