North Tripura

Northern Tripura is culturally and politically a fascinating place. It is an administrative district in the state of Tripura. The district headquarters are located at Kailasahar. Tripura was a separate entity before 1949, it was ruled for centuries by its own Hindu royal family (the Manikyas), based first in Udaipur, then old Agartala, earlier known as Kayerpur and finally Agartala. Indian partition was a major event when people from East Bangladesh (now in Bangladesh) flocked to the state and Tripura soon flooded with Bengali refugees who made the local Borok Tripuri people a minority one. Today Tripura frequently see a armed group fighting between two groups demanding a separate state.

For past few years Northern Tripura have seen a tension between rebels and government. Although the Agartala, Udaipur and Kailasahar areas are safe but there are danger in north-central Tripura. There is strict army vigil though attacks are rare but it cannot written off. In the middle of all tension, hospitality of people here stun most of the traveler. The best place to stay in North Tripura is excellent new Unakoti Tourist Lodge.
