Baliguda
Baliguda is a small tribal village but important tourist
spot because of showcasing rich tribal heritage. It is situated in the
district of Kandhamal and 71km south of Phulbani, surrounded by hills and
Sal forests. It is a typical Orissa village where you can get glimpse of
different friendly tribes like Desia Kondh and Kutia Kondh. Baliguda is also
serve as a base for visits to the Belaghar region and the famous weekly
market at Kothagarh. The place was once notorious for human sacrifice.
Tribal villages are nestled in midst of mountain and forest cores. You can
also have an option to take a small trek to the nearby villages. Other
attractions include a small Wildlife Sanctuary at Kotagarh, which is located
60km away from Baliguda. The nearby village of Padar Sahi makes interesting
small statues using the lost wax process, which the villagers are keen to
sell. Unfortunately, there is only one hotel in that region. Hotel has clean
rooms and quite decent food. All the restuarants are of dhaba style.
Baripada
Baripada is the headquarter of Mayurbhanj district. A nice
place to observe small town Orissan life, with bustling bazaar and a white
Jagannath temple, the place is worth enough to visit for a day trip.
Mayurbhanj was once semi autonomous princely state so the place is dotted
with erstwhile decaying bungalows and civic buildings speak the days of Raj.
It was once the fiefdom of Bhanja kings, it was reputed and long ruling and
also favored by British, whose present incumbent still lives n an
incongruous neoclassical mansion overlooking the river in the north of town.
The main inhabitant of Mayurbhanj is santal tribes, they are the about 70
percent of local tribes and practice agriculture, traditional worship and
Hinduism. There are two main attractions in that place, one is Similipal
Sanctuary, which is an important national park not in Orissa but also in
India. It is one of the few national parks that houses major numbers of
tiger. Apart from tiger, it is a home to Leopards, elephants, mugger
crocodiles and numerous reptiles. Other attraction is Khiching, the ancient
capital of the Bhanja rulers, located about 150km from Baripada. The place
is famous for exquisite Kichakeshwari temple, made up of entirely of
chloride slabs. There is also a small museum boast of excellent specimen of
art and sculptures.
Chandipur Beach
From Balasore it is 16km to reach Chandipur-on-sea.
It is one of the longest beaches of India and beautiful on the eastern
coastal line of India. The long beach is embellished with casuarina trees
and sparkling water makes this small town a favorite tourist destination.
During the day time water recedes from the shore about 5km away, a nice
experience to walk on the wet golden sands. Chandipur beach is also good for
yachting. Take a local fishermen's boats to the mouth if the river
Budhabalanga, also jeep ride along the beach is popular activity. There are
some other attractions near the Chandipur beach such as Remuna,
Panchalingeswar, and Chandaneswara.
Jashipur
Jashipur is a small town in the northeastern Orissa.
Mainly it serves as the entry point for Similipal Park. You need an entry
permit and from here you will get your guide and organize your wildlife tour
to Similipal park. Accommodation is difficult to get. There is one youth
hostel with no food and a hotel with AC and non AC rooms. Similipal national
park spread over an area of 2750 sq.km and perched at a height of 900m. The
national park is an exotic collection of flora and fauna. It is one of the
oldest national park and a site of Tiger Project in India. Apart from
tigers, the place is a home to number of other wild species such as leopard,
and various types of reptiles.
