Geography Of India
India shares borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh and
Bhutan. At its southernmost tip is the tear-drop country, Sri Lanka. The
Himalayas rise out of India in the north. The Indian Ocean surrounding the
southern portions, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Arabian Sea in the
west make India a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. The
legendary Ganges, the holiest and one of the most important rivers in India,
originates in the northern Himalayas and flows into flat plains. The plains
run into the Deccan Plateau in the south.
India vast and varied. Based on arbitrary distinctions, India is divided
into four regions. The north includes Delhi, Punjab and neighboring states;
the Himalayas; agricultural regions and a distinctive desert lifestyle. The
east is made up of Kolkata, Orissa and other states. East India also
contains the eastern triangle, which is entirely distinct. This is the last
gulp of land that expands beyond Bangladesh, ending in the Naga Hills along
the border of Myanmar. West India contains the states of Gujarat,
Maharashtra, Goa, and part of the massive, central state of Madhya Pradesh.
Separated from the north by the Vindhya mountain range, the south comprises
Chennai (Madras), Bangalore, Hyderabad and much of the nation's coastline.
