Location:- Almora is spread across a 5 km ridge atop Kashaya Hill, 5400ft above sea level and 49 km from Ranikhet.
How To Reach: - Almora is 365 m NE of Delhi. Nearest railhead is Kathgodam and takes 3 and half hours from Kathagodam to reach Almora. Another option to take a road trip to Almore. Take NH24 from Delhi to Rampur, NH87 to Kathgodam via Rudrapur and Kathgodam, and then the state highway ( Ranikhet- Almora road) to Almora via Bhowali. Buses are avaliable from ISBT Kasmiri Gate ( Delhi).
When To Go : April To June, September To November.
Where To Stay: There are few Hill resorts but the best bet is to book in advance for KMVN tourist guest houses.
Almora was founded in 1568 and till then inspired many renowned intellectuals, leaders and artists. The headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, was located at Mayawati Ashram then in Almora. It was the place where Swami Vivekananda gave his famous lectures and praised the stark beauty of nature. India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru spent some time at the Jail in Almora during pre-independence.

Nanda Devi Temple

Almora has pretty paved roads with wooden houses elaborately carved facades makes it an alluring destination for travelers. Dozens of scenic retreats, pilgrimage centers and excursions opportunities makes it a popular attraction among travelers across the world. Through some hairpin turns and undulating roads- discover one of the smallest hill places in the state of Uttarakhand. Almora has wide range of hotels and resorts and one can visit nearby attractions like Binsar, Jageshwar and Kausani.

Sights And Activities

Nanda Devi Temple
This small but beautiful temple is located in the Lalal Bazaar dates back to Chand Raja era, and is covered in folk art carvings, some erotic.

Gobind Vallabh Pany Public Museum
The museum is placed near the bus stand in the midst of bustling area. You can discover the art and culture of Kumaon region, also preserve some rare collection of ‘Apen’ folk-paintings.

Chital Temple
This serene temple is situated around 8 km from the city. The temple is dedicated to Gollu Deva, the most revered deity of Kumaon.
Katarmal Sun Temple
The temple is more than 800 years old built duirng the reign of Katyuri rulers. This 50 stone temple is around 15 km from Almora. Drive down to Kosi (13 km), where you cross the river and trek up to 2 km to reach these temples. Special festival occurs on Mahashivratri in spring, when the temple complex is adorned with colors.

Excursion From Almora
Three beautiful places are there to explore before check out from Almora. The temple town of Jageshwar, which is 33 km, Binsar located at impressive 7,913 ft from where you can spot some mighty peaks like, Gangotri shivling, Nanda Kot, Nanda Devi and other peaks. The entire region of Binsar is now a wildlife sanctuary and home of bear, panther and numerous birds. Another beautiful place around 52 km from Almora is Kausani that perched at the height of 6,201 ft high. The best part of Kausani is the view of 350 km stretch of the Himalayas from this town.

Shopping in Almora
Almora has plenty of shopping options with a long stretch bazaar. The famous among all is Lal Bazzar that is 200 years old shop for Kumaoni style jewels at the silversmith and copperware from the coppersmith. There are also pashima shawls and wool blankets that speak of traditional designs and weaving skills. Among other interesting by is Angora cloth made up of fur of Angora rabbits.
