Milam Glacier Trek

Milam Glacier is a massive glacier perched at a height of 3450m is reached along an ancient trade route to Tibet, which was closed in 1962 because of Indo-Sino war. Later on years it has opened up for the adventurers who take up the challenging eight day trek, 118km trek to this tough terrain. Milam Glacier expose much of rough Himalayan beauty of Uttarakhand. The trek is quite tough and passes through some of the magnificent Himalayan ranges like Nanda Devi (7816m) to the east. More enthusiast trekkers go for a side trip to Nanda Devi, which takes another 30km tough trek.

Milam Glacier Trek

The trek passes through quaint village, rugged terrain and picturesque stream. The trek starts from Munshiyari ( 2290m) to Milam. Moderate walks while crossing the green hills and passing through Panch Chuli range, can captivate anyone eyes. This unspoilt landscape is true nature’s wonder, a profusion of unique flora and fauna. Base camp is at the height of 3434 meters, boast mesmerizing view of Nanda Devi. Higher trek follows the path through Brijigang Pass to Ralam Valley. Not only magnificent views of Himalayas but it’s an overall learning experience about culture, cuisines and traditions of remote Uttarakhand villages.

High altitude sickness is the main health problem often novice trekkers suffer from. The trek is tough and require physical and mental fitness. It is advisable to check once your medical fitness before venturing to the tough terrain. At present permits are not required but it is advisable to carry your passport. Basic amenities includes tents and food as many villages en route are forsaken. KMVN guest houses and PWD tourist lodges are only places to take shelter in Munshyari. To reach Munshiyari one has to take bus from Almora(take 11 hours) or shared taxis.

Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Munsiyari - Lilam (1852mts.) 15kms
The trek starts from Munshiyari early morning and reach Lilam by evening. Along the road you will pass through Paton and Bhui villages on the left bank of Gori river. Lilam is small village, which is a base camps for the trek.

Day 2 : Lilam - Bogudiyar (2450mts.) 12kms
Another long trek from Lilam to Bogudiyar takes full day. The trek passes along thick forest of Uttes, Ralam river and Gori Ganga. Bogudiyar is the place where Poting rivulet meets Gori river. After a steep climb you will reach the base camp of Bogudiyar.
Day 3 : Bogidiyar - Laspa - Nandakot - Rilkot(3200mts) 12kms
Another 12km trek to Rilkot via Lapsa, Nandakot to reach Rilkot. Lapsa village is where you can take rest for a while. Rilkot village is located on the northern glacier of Nandakot. Visit the old ruins of old Rilkot. River beach is the best place to sign off for the day.

Day 4 : Rilkot - Milam Village (3434mts.) 20kms
Milam village is the last village before the zero point. This will be the longest trek of whole itinerary that covers around 20km. Soon after Rilkot Martoli peak is clearly visible. Apart from that the eastern and main peaks of Nanda Devi Sanctuary and the Har Deval peak is also visible. Overnight stay in Milam village.

Day 5 : Milam Village - Milam Glacier - Milam Village 16kms / 8hrs Tents
Trek from Milam village to Milam glacier and back to Milam village to arrive by evening. Trek brings one to the Milam glacier with various glaciers feeding the main one from different valleys.
