Location : 150km northwest of Kolkata in the Bankura district of West Bengal.
How To Reach : Either by bus or from train. Buses from Esplanade Terminus takes around 4 hours. Train from Howrah also take the same time. The nearest airport is in Kolkata.
Where To Stay : Number of budget accommodation available in the place. Also number of good hotels are now mushrooming up due to growing popularity of the place.
When To Go : Any time of the year. To see the Bishnupur festival, visit the last week of December.
Getting Around : By cycle rickshaw.

A sleepy backwater town in Bankura district, Bishnupur is renowned all over world for its exquisite terracotta temples. It was the capital of Malla Rajas(kings), under whose patronage one of India’s greatest schools of music developed. Largely beyond the sphere of Muslim influence in Bengal, Bishnupur’s long tradition of temple-building had its roots in the basic form of the domestic hut. Translated into temple architecture, built of brick, as stone was rarely available and faced with finely carved terracotta decoration that depicts the scene from the epic Ramayana, the temple show simplicity of forms with vibrant texture.

Shyamrai Temple

The temples at Bishnupur are mostly of Eka Ratna type with a single tower upon a sloping roof and a square cell known as Grabhagriha. The porch on each side reposed with multicusped arches known as Lalji, Kalachand, Radhashyam, Joramandir and Nandalal. The famous Jor Bangla temple was built in 1655 holds a stylish character with two Dochala (two floor) structures joined by charchala (four) sikhara at the top. The 1600 Rasmancha temple was built with a singular architectural style with a pyramidal roof standing on a spacious laterite plinth.

Bishnupur temples are world heritage sites and people from all over the world come to see the magnificent yet simple terracotta structures. There are number of temples dated back to 16th to 17th century. Jorabangla temple, which was built by king Singha Dev in the 17th century is an ornate terracotta carvings and a fine example of Bengal architecture. There are other notable temples like Nandalal temple, Radhamadhab temple, Kalachand temple, Radhagovinda temple, Sarbamangala and Shyamrai temple. Shyamrai temple is also known as Panch Ratna ( five jewels) featuring Lord Krishna’s life in a beautiful terracotta carvings on the walls of it. There are other temples like Krishna –Balram temple, Malleshwar, Sanreshwar, Madangopal, Chinnamasta temple. Rasmancha is the oldest brick structure built by Bir Hambir. It is the most famous one as it is located at the center of the town. There are also some cannons of Malla king are placed in the temple premises.

Bishnupur Music
Bishnupur is well known for its classical gharana. Classical music is one of the wealth of Bishnupur and still there are people around who remain in oblivion but have a great musical heritage. If you are a Indian classical fan, look out for the opportunities and for sure Bishnupur won’t disappoint you.

Shopping
Bankura horse made up of terracotta and wood is now become a symbol of Indian handicraft. Baluchari saris are another famous Bishnupur trademark. Traditional saris are woven with Mahabharata and Ramayana symbols but you can also find other versions. Conch shell beads and souvenirs are also famous among travelers. There are number of shops like Terracota Crafts at Dalmadal Road, Sri hari Shankha Bhandar, Shankharipara, Silk Khadi Seva Mandlal at Baltala area.

Eat
Do not expect posh restaurants and bars. But generally small hotel serves good Bengali food. Food is spicy and undoubtedly delicious.
